| IDEAS & SUGGESTIONS FOR H.A.W. |
- Place an announcement regarding Handicapped Awareness Week (HAW) in the school bulletin that is read aloud over the public address system
- Place materials on bulletin board in highly visible areas.
- Go to all the classrooms and teach the students to sign, for example, peanut butter cookies. Pass out cookies to all classes with a copy of sign language symbols.
- Hold an Awareness Week Reception for all staff. Feature a handicapped person in the daily bulletin.
- Hold mini-workshops on program modification for classroom teachers. Workshops can be given by the Disabled student’s Service.
- Make H.A.W. badges and distribute to staff. Distribute posters in the community. Have books about disabilities available for loan. Obtain appropriate films from public libraries.
- Students are sent outside the classrooms and asked to pretend to have a disability and have them shadow a person with the same disability. A panel discussion may follow.
- Activity - Poster Contest
- Provide an overview of different majors that teach people to work with people with disabilities.
- Offer coffee and cookies compliments of the Special Education Department.
- Include daily bulletin notices of famous people with disabilities or some other inspirational message pertaining to H.A.W.
- Place posters made by special education students around campus promotion H.A.W.
- Make and distribute desk favors to administrators, secretaries, teachers, etc., using the H.A.W. theme.
- Make H.A.W. lesson plans available for easy distribution to teachers.
- Provide variety of hands-on materials for role playing activities: crutches, casts, braces, glasses, wheelchairs, etc.
- Set up a wheelchair obstacle course that staff and students can participate in.
